< LYING PRESS WITH PLOUGH >

Both are built using hand tools only and no batched components are used.  Although the press can be purchased separately (and ditto for the plough), the two components have been designed as an integral unit.

The main body of the press and plough is constructed from Tasmanian Oak, whilst the wooden screws are of European Beech.  The timber has been sanded and sealed with lacquer, then given a light coating of wood oil.  Screw threads, however, have been treated with beeswax and should not be painted or oiled.

The plough blade is held in place by magnets, allowing for easy removal when sharpening is required. The blade, which is a modified block-plane blade, has been given a slight hollow grind and is easily sharpened with a stone, taking care to keep the back of the blade dead flat.

It is most important that the blade is kept sharp and that only a few leaves of paper are cut with each pass. Using excessive force or advancing the blade too much on each pass will result in a poor-quality fore-edge and may also damage the blade housing.  With a sharp blade and a slow, methodical action, the fore-edge of the text block can be cut rapidly.  Even quite thick blocks can be cut in just a few minutes.

The wooden screws of the press are held in place with small wooden pegs protruding into a recessed channel on the body of the screw. The external ends of the pegs are visible on the underside of the front jaw of the press.  After prolonged use, it may be necessary to lightly tap these pegs so that they are properly seated in the recessed channel of the screw body.

Because the plough and press have been built using hand tools only, there may be slight imperfections in the finish of the plough and press. However, both units have been built to function efficiently and have been tested for accuracy of cut before shipping. They are built for use and not ostentation.

They are handmade pieces, they will have some natural marks on the surface from the wood. It is not damaged marks.
